Why is there more information on some charities than others?


The information presented in this website is primarily taken from public records available for consultation on the website of the Charity Commission for England and Wales and the Office for the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). 

At the moment, OSCR publishes much less detailed information on charities than the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Also, charities registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales are subject to different degrees of reporting requirements depending on income thresholds. All this affects the level of information available for each individual charity.  

The Register of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is still at very early stages of development and information available on Northern Irish charities is scarce.

How was the data on armed forces charities gathered? 


DSC conducted a comprehensive review on the charitable objects and activities of each individual charity using public records available for consultation in the website of the Charity Commission for England and Wales; the website of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR); charities’ websites (when they had one) and other public information found through internet searches. Two surveys were also sent out to supplement desk research on armed forces charities. 

How do you define an armed forces charity?


The definition of an armed forces charity utilised for this report is applied as outlined in
Our reports from 2016 onwards is as follows:

‘Charities that are established specifically to support past and present
members of the armed forces and their families (the armed forces
community). In this context, an armed forces charity must be able to
apply this definition to their beneficiaries.’

Cadet charities are excluded on the basis that by their own admission they are
not firmly affiliated with the armed forces, and their beneficiaries (the cadets themselves)
are not necessarily members of the armed forces community.

How many armed forces charities are on the site? 


The site contains close to 1,700 armed forces charities registered in the UK.

Does DSC produce reports and publications about armed forces charities? 


There are currently five accompanying reports to the website containing a detailed analysis of the armed forces charity sector. This is available to download FREE on the website under ‘Research’.

Is it relevant outside the UK? 


The site primarily features armed forces charities which are registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. It also features charities registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator and charities that have been granted charitable tax exemptions in Northern Ireland. However, there are a number of armed forces charities that operate and provide support outside of UK boundaries.

Who is the site for? 


This website and the reports contained within are intended as a resource for charity workers, policymakers, media organisations and members of the public interested in armed forces charities and their work. 

Do I need to subscribe to use the site? 


No, you do not need to register to use the site. The website is free to use and the accompanying reports are also free to download. These are provided free of charge as part of our funding agreement with the Forces in Mind Trust.

Why has DSC developed this site? 


Funded by Forces in Mind Trust, DSC has developed this website, and the accompanying reports to provide an independent, robust and evidenced analysis of UK armed forces charities which can be used by past and present members of the UK armed forces, their dependants, policy-makers, government, the media, the public and the armed forces charities themselves to inform givers, donors and funders; inform commentators; give robust evidence to politicians and policy makers.
